Xavier Greyling

MCIPS, LLB, Legal Advisor, Procurement and Commercial Strategist, South Africa

Xavier, a B Juris, LL.B.-graduate and admitted Attorney since 2000 (now non-Practising), commenced his career in Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape, and gained exposure over a wide and diverse array of legal and related matters ranging from

legal collections, civil litigation and defence, criminal representation and contract negotiations and drafting.

After leaving practise, Xavier Joined Sappi Fine Paper and held a number of procurement and related positions over some nine years, the last culminating as Contract and Support Manager in the then newly created Centre-Led Procurement structure. Great positive contribution was achieved in respect of contract negotiation, commercial price variation formulae formulation, contract drafting and management (including supplier/vendor management) and commodity management.

As National Procurement Manager – Sundries at AVENG Trident Steel a strategic approach consisted of the implementation of a centralized procurement function, its structure, policies and procedures, et al, all anew to fill the void of an absent procurement portfolio.

Within the ‘Centre-Led Procurement’-function of AVENG, Xavier holds the position of Commodity Manager – MRO & Services (with an estimated annual spend of R4.3bn), a position currently still employed in. An entire career in the corporate environment, since first employment, has extensively been in the realm of Centralized/Centre-led Procurement with specific emphasis on Strategic Sourcing. Excellence through procurement supervising, procurement support and national procurement management have culminated in appointment to the position of Commodity Manager (current).

Strategic orientation is evident from current position with main objective being the development, implementation and maintenance of a Decentralized, centre-led Procurement model.

Exposure through direct involvement in commodity classification, both at previous employers and currently via the Aveng Cross-functional Teams, confirms the synergized approach to Strategic Sourcing. Most important support for this application is the ability to be highly adaptable through the application of already developed, universal principles of Strategic Sourcing through commodity identification and process implementation with the maxim: “Buying the Spending of Money, Procurement is the Saving of Money!”
