I obtained my degree in Social Work in 1976 and was employed as social worker from 1977 – 1982. I then moved into Higher Education (1983 – 2011) initially as a lecturer and finally as Head of the Social Work Department at the Huguenot College, Wellington, a satellite campus for UNISA;
I formally joined Local Government in 2009 as a proportional councillor in the Drakenstein Municipality. From 2011, I have been a full-time mayoral committee member in the Cape Winelands District Municipality and currently the Executive Mayor.
Underpinning my political career in bringing about change in my community is my people-centred and politically-involved family background, my free-thinking views as a social worker, my belief in the human race, a high premium on equitable and fair distribution of opportunities/resources and an over-arching
respect for humans.
My formal qualifications constitute a BA Degree in Social Work, an Honour’s Degree in Social Science, a Master’s Degree in Welfare Planning and a Doctorate in Teaching and Learning within a diverse student population;
I pride myself in my value-based, disciplined, positive, respectful and healthy life approach;
I am a committed and hard-working professional, well-trained, and experienced in a variety of areas such as the basic needs of humans, critical and analytical thinking, management, policy-making, Local Governance, party political strategies and various chapters of legislation.
