I then moved into Higher Education (1983 &#8211; 2011) initially as a lecturer and finally as Head of the Social Work Department at the Huguenot College, Wellington, a satellite campus for UNISA;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I formally joined Local Government in 2009 as a proportional councillor in the Drakenstein Municipality. From 2011, I have been a full-time mayoral committee member in the Cape Winelands District Municipality and currently the Executive Mayor.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Underpinning my political career in bringing about change in my community is my people-centred and politically-involved family background, my free-thinking views as a social worker, my belief in the human race, a high premium on equitable and fair distribution of opportunities\/resources and an over-arching<br>respect for humans.<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My formal qualifications constitute a BA Degree in Social Work, an Honour\u2019s Degree in Social Science, a Master\u2019s Degree in Welfare Planning and a Doctorate in Teaching and Learning within a diverse student population;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I pride myself in my value-based, disciplined, positive, respectful and healthy life approach;<\/p>    <p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am a committed and hard-working professional, well-trained, and experienced in a variety of areas such as the basic needs of humans, critical and analytical thinking, management, policy-making, Local Governance, party political strategies and various chapters of legislation.<\/p>","protected":false},"featured_media":7289,"template":"","speaker_category":[42],"speaker_year":[38],"class_list":["post-6873","speaker","type-speaker","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","speaker_category-conference-speaker","speaker_year-38"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v28.6 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/product\/yoast-seo-wordpress\/ -->\n<title>Cllr Dr Helena Von Schlicht - Western Cape Procurement Conference<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"I obtained my degree in Social Work in 1976 and was employed as social worker from 1977 \u2013 1982.
